Black & White Ibis Feathers
The ibis may be a familiar sight in Australia, but its lineage carries a much older and more sacred story.
For thousands of years, the ibis held profound significance in ancient Egypt. The closely related Sacred Ibis was associated with Thoth, god of wisdom, writing and learning, and was represented in temple offerings, sacred imagery and ritual objects. The ibis became so closely connected with Thoth that the god was frequently depicted with the head of an ibis.
The Australian White Ibis shares the striking white plumage and black features of its sacred relative. In ritual, I work with this contrast as a representation of duality and balance: dark and light, shadow and illumination, endings and beginnings, the known and unknown. Neither exists without the other.
Ibis feathers can be incorporated into:
Balance and duality workings – acknowledging and working with opposing forces
Wisdom and knowledge rituals – drawing on the ibis connection with Thoth
Shadow work – exploring what is hidden while remaining connected to what is known
Transformation and transition – working between endings and beginnings
Altar work – representing air, wisdom, balance or duality
Spell jars and spell pouches – adding the feather whole or using a small section within your working
Smoke cleansing – using the feather to gently direct ritual smoke
Each set contains five naturally shed Australian White Ibis feathers, personally hand-collected by me. I cleanse the feathers in ritual and bless them individually, ready for you to incorporate into your own practice.
As these are naturally found feathers, each will vary slightly in size, shape, markings and condition. These differences are part of the individual character of each feather.
