Begin Your

One of the most meaningful parts of my practice is helping other women discover their own. Modern witchcraft isn't about rules or perfection. It's about intention, ritual and creating a practice that supports the life you want to live. My hope is that this guide gives you the confidence to begin.

Your Practice, Your Path

There is no single way to practise witchcraft.

Your practice is a deeply personal expression of your beliefs, intentions and connection to the world around you. It will evolve over time, shaped by your experiences, the rituals that resonate with you, and the path you choose to follow.

Whether you practise privately, share your journey with others, or one day choose to join a coven, none is more valid than the other. There is no judgement within The Craft, only the understanding that every witch walks their own path.

The most important thing is not how your practice looks, but that it feels authentic to you.

Discover Your Path

One of the first decisions is,

"What type of witch am I?"

The truth is, there isn't one answer.

Witchcraft is an incredibly diverse practice, with many different paths, traditions and areas of interest. Some witches are drawn to working with herbs and botanicals, others with candles, divination, moon cycles, crystals, deity work or spirit communication. Many practitioners naturally combine several paths, creating a practice that is uniquely their own.

Don't feel pressured to choose a label. Your practice will evolve as you learn, experiment and discover what resonates with you. The most meaningful practice is one that feels authentic, not one that fits neatly into a category.

Nature-Based Practices

Working with the natural world.

These practices are centred around herbs, trees, flowers, crystals, the seasons, the Moon and the changing rhythms of nature.

Your Altar

An altar is the foundation of your practice. It doesn't need to be elaborate or expensive. It simply becomes a dedicated space where you return to set intentions, perform rituals and connect with your practice. Whether it's a permanent display or something you set up only when needed, your altar should feel personal and meaningful to you.

A Permanent or Temporary Altar?

One of your first decisions is whether your altar will be permanent or created only when you're working in ritual.

There is no right answer.

Some witches have a dedicated altar that remains set up every day. Others create a sacred space only when performing a ritual before carefully packing everything away again. My own practice sits somewhere in between. I have a dedicated space that is always there, but only a few meaningful pieces remain on my altar permanently. The rest of my tools are chosen intentionally for each ritual, then packed away until they're needed again.

Choosing Your Tools

Every tool within The Craft serves a purpose. Some are used to cleanse a space, others to hold intention, represent the elements, support divination or assist in ritual and spell crafting.

Understanding why a tool is used is far more important than owning it.

As your practice develops, you'll naturally discover which tools resonate with you and which become an important part of your own rituals. There is no expectation to have everything. Begin with the essentials, learn the purpose behind each tool, and allow your collection to reflect the way you choose to practise.

Download the extended Essential Witches Toolkit guide to learn about each tool, its symbolic meaning, how it is used in ritual and more.

Types Of Rituals

Witchcraft is an incredibly broad practice, with countless traditions, methods and ways of working.

This guide focuses on the types of rituals and spell crafting that form the foundation of my own practice. They are simple, symbolic and centred around physical ritual tools that transform intention into meaningful action.

I encourage you to do your own research to discover the right rituals for your practice.

Continue Your Journey

Beginning your practice isn't about learning everything at once. Choose one area that interests you, learn its symbolism, and let your confidence grow with each ritual you perform.

Whether you're creating your first altar, exploring candle magic or learning to craft your own spell jars, every ritual becomes another step in building a practice that is uniquely your own.
